Maremma Sheepdog

Large, sturdy and strong, the Maremma Sheepdog has a majestic and rustic appearance and functions as a guard of livestock and property. Resembling a polar bear, the Maremma Sheepdog’s long, harsh white- or cream-colored coat helps him blend well with the sheep he’s guarding. He has a large, flat head, triangular ears, deep chest and low-set tail. The Maremma Sheepdog’s body is of heavy build, and is slightly longer than it is tall.

Temperament

Attentive, protective and trustworthy, the Maremma Sheepdog is a dedicated, courageous livestock and property guard. He thrives on having a job to do, and therefore isn’t recommended for sole use as a pet. The affectionate Maremma Sheepdog is perceptive and steadfast toward his master, forming a close bond with his human family. The Maremma Sheepdog is good tempered, provided he has a job to keep him occupied and is properly trained and heavily socialized from puppyhood.

Upkeep

The Maremma Sheepdog’s dense undercoat sheds twice a year, typically in the spring and fall, during which more frequent brushing and bathing may be necessary. Otherwise, regular grooming, including nail trimming, ear cleaning and teeth brushing, is all it takes to keep the breed looking is best. The Maremma Sheepdog requires moderate exercise, such as daily leashed walks or free play in a large fenced yard. The Maremma Sheepdog can be housetrained relatively easily, however, more effort is required on the trainer’s end for obedience training for this independently thinking breed.
